We’ve all had those places that call us back, time and time again. Perhaps it’s the endless charm, the constant evolution, or simply a feeling of belonging. For me, time in Germany, particularly Berlin actually was not one of those cities, so heading back for a second time was quite the surprise. My trip was an impulsive add on to my study abroad 10 day trip and we didn’t really spend much time here. This time around In 2024 is when I truly fell in love with Berlin’s unique blend of history, culture, and edgy modernity.
In this guide, I’ll share my favorite spots, hidden gems, and insider tips to help you make the most of your time in Berlin. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, I hope this guide inspires you to explore this incredible city.
Where we stayed During Time in Berlin, Germany
Hampton Inn by Hilton Berlin City
The Hampton Inn Berlin City Centre Alexanderplatz offered a comfortable and convenient stay in the heart of Berlin. The hotel’s prime location puts us within walking distance of major attractions like Alexanderplatz, the Berlin TV Tower, and the Museum Island.
The rooms are clean, modern, and well-equipped with amenities like free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a comfortable bed. Exploring our Time in Berlin, Germany with a WelcomeBerlin card
I’ve always been a bit skeptical of city passes. They often seem overpriced and not worth the investment. However, during my recent trip to Berlin, I decided to give the Berlin WelcomeCard a try. And let me tell you, it was a game-changer.
Berlin’s public transportation system is incredibly efficient, and the Berlin WelcomeCard offers unlimited travel within the city. As a solo traveler who relies heavily on public transport, this was a huge plus. The card also provides discounts on various attractions, museums, and tours. While I didn’t end up using all the discounts, the savings on public transport alone made the card worthwhile.
If you’re planning time In Berlin, Germany and are considering a city pass, I highly recommend the Berlin WelcomeCard. It can save you time, money, and hassle.
When to Visit Berlin, Germany
The best time in Germany to visit Berlin largely depends on your preferences. If you’re a fan of festive atmospheres and vibrant city life, the Christmas market season (November to December) is a magical time to visit. The city’s historic squares transform into enchanting winter wonderlands, adorned with twinkling lights, festive stalls, and delicious treats.
For those who prefer milder weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal. Spring brings blooming flowers and pleasant temperatures, while autumn offers stunning fall foliage and cultural events. Summer (June-August) is the peak tourist season in Berlin. While the city is bustling with activity, it can also be crowded and expensive. However, it’s a great time to enjoy outdoor activities like boating on the Spree River or relaxing in one of the city’s many parks. Winter (December-February) can be quite cold, but it offers a unique charm. The city’s Christmas markets are a must-see, and the festive atmosphere is contagious.
Now let’s get into it! Here’s my ultimate itinerary for a perfect 72-hour stay:
Day 1: A Historical Journey
Morning: A Historical Start
Kick off your day by exploring the iconic Brandenburg Gate. This historic landmark, once divided by the Berlin Wall, now stands as a symbol of German unity.
Afterward, head to the Berlin Wall Memorial by the S1 or S2 to learn about the city’s tumultuous past. The East Side Gallery, a section of the wall adorned with colorful murals, is a must-see.
Afternoon: A Cultural Dive
For art and history enthusiasts, a visit to Museum Island is a must. The Pergamon Museum, with its stunning ancient artifacts, is a particular highlight.
If you’re more interested in a modern cultural experience, head to the Hackescher Markt neighborhood. This trendy area is filled with unique shops, cafes, and street art.
Evening: A Night Out
Berlin’s nightlife is legendary. Head to the Prenzlauer Berg district for a laid-back atmosphere and trendy bars, or explore the vibrant Friedrichshain neighborhood for a more energetic scene. If you are feeling food adventurous instead head out to Rüyam Gemüse Kebab. This place is 1000% worth the hype! The portions are huge and it is for sure a great value for the amount delicious food.
Day 2: A Cultural Dive
Morning: Alternative Walking Tour
Start your day by taking a walking tour through Alternative Walking Tours and let me tell you it was so much FUN. It gave us a unique perspective on the city of Berlin. The tour material really touched on the people and art aspects of the city’s history. By the end we definitely needed a foot break, but don’t worry it leaves you off in the trendy area of Kreuzberg, which reminded me a lot of Brooklyn, NY. Step into any nearby coffee shop and relax for a bit after, but my favorite was Bonanza Coffee Roasters.
Afternoon: Stroll and Relax
Next take the U8 over to the next stop. Take a leisurely stroll through the trendy neighborhoods of Hackescher Markt and Boxhagener Platz. These areas are filled with unique shops, cafes, and street art. You can also visit the Hackescher Markt, a historic market hall that now houses shops, galleries, and restaurants.
Evening: Fun or Hangout?
Enjoy a classical concert at the Philharmonie Berlin or catch a show at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. For a more casual evening, explore the city’s diverse culinary scene. I’d recommend Gaststätte Sophieneck for German food. The plates are huge, and the food tasty. If you are looking for a sweet treat after, head over to Cuore di Vetro.
Day 3: A Day Trip to Potsdam and Beyond
Morning: Gardens and Wonder
Take a 1 hour away day trip to Potsdam via public transportation or private transfer to admire the stunning palaces and gardens of Sanssouci Park. The Potsdam Palace and the New Palace are particularly impressive.
Afternoon:
Take a trip back to Berlin and explore the charming neighborhood of Charlottenburg. Visit the Charlottenburg Palace and stroll through its beautiful gardens.
Evening:
Relax in a cozy beer garden like Golgatha Biergarten (note it is closed in the winter), enjoy a boat tour on the Spree River, or simply wander through the city streets. Consider visiting the TV Tower for panoramic views of the city. If you are looking to eat around the TV Tower, you’ll be in the city center and can stop by BLOCK HOUSE or Burgermeister Alexanderplatz.
As you wander through Berlin’s vibrant streets, you’ll discover a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and modernity. From exploring the iconic Brandenburg Gate to immersing yourself in the world-class museums on Museum Island, there’s something for everyone in this dynamic metropolis.
Remember to take your time, embrace the unexpected, and most importantly, enjoy the journey. Berlin is a city that will leave a lasting impression, and I can’t wait to hear about your own adventures in this incredible place.
