1. Getting to the City Center from Florence Airport (FLR)?

For those arriving by air, Florence Airport offers a convenient connection to the city center. Taxis are readily available for a comfortable and direct transfer to your hotel. Alternatively, several bus lines operate between the airport and the main train station, Santa Maria Novella. From there, you can easily connect to your hotel or chosen mode of transportation for further exploration.

2. Arriving by Train?

Florence Santa Maria Novella Station: This grand train station serves as your central hub in Florence. Situated northwest of the historic center, it offers a convenient starting point for your exploration. Many hotels are within a comfortable walking distance (around 10 minutes to the iconic Duomo), allowing you to drop off your luggage and dive right into the city’s vibrant atmosphere. For those with heavier bags or seeking a quicker connection, a taxi rank is readily available just outside the station.

3. Considering a car?

Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL): Be aware that Florence’s city center operates as a ZTL, restricting most vehicle access. Unless you have a special permit or your hotel offers ZTL access (confirm this beforehand!), it’s best to avoid driving within the historic core. The potential hassle and frustration outweigh the convenience.
Parking Outside the ZTL: A more relaxed and rewarding approach is to park your car in a convenient paid lot outside the ZTL zone. Several options are available, including a large lot next to the train station itself, Central Parking Firenze on the north side of the city, or Parcheggio Sant’Ambrogio on the east side. From these parking areas, you can easily explore the city on foot. Florence is a pedestrian-friendly haven, with most major attractions and charming neighborhoods concentrated within a walkable distance. Strolling the streets allows you to soak in the city’s unique atmosphere and hidden gems you might miss while driving. Taxis are also a viable option for shorter distances if needed.
Driving Challenges: Even for experienced drivers, navigating Florence’s historic center by car can be stressful. One-way streets are the norm, and some even change direction frequently. Traffic congestion and limited parking further add to the frustration. Unless you have a specific reason requiring a car throughout your stay, consider alternative transportation options like trains, buses, or taxis within the city.
