This Hudson Valley gem is just an hour train ride or 60 miles north from the Big Apple, but it packs a punch with its vibrant mix of contemporary art, quirky shops, and riverfront bliss. So, buckle up!

Here is a little background to get us started...This historic town whispers tales of the American Revolution, once earning the quirky title of "Hat Making Capital of the US" with its bustling factories. Today, Beacon has traded thread for brushes, transforming into a vibrant haven for art enthusiasts and weekend adventurers.

My Beacon Day Trip guide unlocks the town's highlights and offers tips to maximize your limited time. Let's explore the art, the hikes, the bites, and everything in between – Beacon awaits!

Here are my things to know for a day trip to Beacon:

Before we dive into the nitty gritty let's first touch on how you can arrive to Beacon, NY from New York City.

Getting there?

Reaching this Hudson Valley gem from NYC is just as easy as it is delightful. Here's your stress-free guide to getting there:

driving into beacon new york from new york city

Car: If you love hitting the open road, hop in your car and zoom up the 60-mile journey north. Beacon welcomes vehicles with open arms, offering ample parking so you can ditch the struggle and focus on exploring. We didn't have much of a problem with free parking, which was available at lots or on the streets.

Train: Board the Metro-North Railroad and let the city fade in your rearview mirror. Catch the train at Grand Central or 125th Street Station, hop on the Hudson line, and enjoy the scenic ride as the river shimmers past. Round-trip peak-time tickets cost about $46, with off-peak deals at $35. Snag your ticket at a station kiosk or on the MTA eTix app – easy as pie!

  • Pro tip: To avoid standing for the scenic 1.5-hour journey, let's master the weekend warrior approach:

  • Early Bird Gets the Seat: Aim to arrive at the station a good 30 minutes before your preferred departure time. This gives you prime position to snag a window seat and settle in with your travel essentials.

  • Off-Peak: If flexibility is your friend, consider weekday travel. Trains are typically less crowded during the week, offering a peaceful ride and an abundance of space to stretch out and unwind.

Best Time of Year?

Deciding the best time to visit depends on your personal preferences and desired activities. Here's a peek into Beacon's seasonal offerings:
